Budgeting Tips
Looking for budgeting tips that actually work?
If you're reading this you're already well aware of the budgeting concept. It is a simple concept after all. Put a certain amount of money aside for a specific purpose. Anyone can sit down and write up a budget. You just take your total income then subtract all your expenses and hopefully what's left is not a negative amount - right? ...Wrong! Writing up a good budget is not quite that simple. There's a few other factors to consider:
All of the above are very important points to consider when writing up your budget. Here is a free budget worksheetyou might find useful from Gail Vaz Oxlade's website, a highly respected financial expert. She's the host of a TV show in Canada called Til Debt Do Us Part. It has handy guidelines for all the above points. You can also find tons of great budgeting tips there. Top 10 Budgeting Tips
Let's break down those top 10 budgeting tips in more detail. 1 Pay yourself first - By far, the most common mistake in budgeting is failing to pay yourself first. Think of yourself as any other expense in your budget - except that this one has top priority. It has to be paid on time without fail, if you put if off the money will most likely get used for something else. 2 Track your daily spending - Two very important budgeting tips for successful budgeting are 1) to know exactly what your expenses are and 2) how much your spending. Keep a daily log or journal of what you spend on a daily basis. This ensures accuracy when factoring budgeted expenses. 3 Customize your budget to your specific needs - This is why its always best to write your own budget. Nobody knows your financial picture better than you except maybe your spouse. If that's the case sit down together and build a budget that makes sense to you. 4 Live on cash - This is an extremely effective way to cut spending but not terribly popular with most budgeters. You set aside only the money you need for things like food, transportation, entertainment etc. When done right its a surefire way to avoid overspending. 5 Set realistic budgeting goals - One of the key budgeting tips for building a successful budget is setting realistic goals for yourself. Someone who makes 20,000/year shouldn't set a goal of saving 100,000 in 5 years its just not possible. 6 Have fun with your budget - One of the most important budgeting tips to take away from this article is "Don't cut out the fun" by cutting out the things you enjoy doing. Some people do this just to help their bottom line but a good budget is one you can live with. If there's no room for fun in the budget it won't last long. You'll get what I call "Budget Burnout". 7 Start an emergency fund - Another very important tip from my list of budgeting tips is to start a fund for emergencies. Some experts say you should have between 1 to 3 months salary saved for emergencies. Start small, save about $1000 and try to build up the fund to equal about 1 - 3 months expenses. It's a bit of a tall order but you'll be glad you did should something unexpected happen. It's really a small part of your budget and not having one in place could be disastrous. 8 Make more/spend less - When expenses are too high and/or income is too low and you've cut all the expenses you can out of your budget - drastic changes may be needed. Consider taking on more hours, getting a part time job, renting out additional rooms to boost income. You can cut spending by selling the second car, the extra expense of a second car may be putting you deeper in the hole. 9 Don't leave anything out - It's vitally important to have a clear and accurate picture of your finances when doing up your budget. Don't forget to include expenses or income that is not paid monthly. For example, annual credit card fees or quarterly membership dues etc. 10 Stay on track - Keep your eyes on the prize. The prize being whatever financial goal you set for yourself. Sticking to a budget can become a bit tedious at times and its easy to go off track and say to yourself "just this one time." The more you do this the harder it gets to get back on track. A budget done right shouldn't be hard to stick to. If you find that it is hard to stick to your budget then it may time to re-work it. ^ Back to top of Budgeting Tips > Go to Money Saving Ideas Home page Table of ContentHow to Create a Budget - Get more budgeting tips and learn how to create a budget that not only works but one that you can actually live with!
