  • Unplug electronics - one easy way to save energy and money is to unplug electronics when they are not in use. Many electronics have digital clocks or LED (light emitting diodes) which use a surprising amount of energy even in standby mode. • Run major appliances only after 9pm - This little known fact about off-peak rates can save you hundreds of dollars a year in energy savings. Most hydro or electric companies have lower rates after 9pm and on weekends. Running major appliances only during off-peak hours to get the lower rate can save you alot on your next hydro bill. Worth investigating with your own hydro or electric company.
  • Turn down thermostats - This is an one of the more obvious home energy saving tips but did you know that doing this can knock 10% of your hydro bill? Just turn your thermostats down between 1 and 3 degrees while your at home. Turn them down 4-5 degrees (7-9 degrees Fahrenheit) before you go to bed at night and when no one is at home.
  • Let the sun in - Open your blinds and curtains to let the sun heat parts of your home.
  • Use dishwasher only on full loads - Never run the dishwasher unless it has a full load. If applicable use the "energy saver" setting to dry your dishes.
  • Wash clothes in cold water - Washing your clothes in cold water is really easy way to conserve energy - you won't even notice any difference.
  • Quick showers, no baths - Short, quick showers are far more cost effective than baths. Baths use more hot water which means more energy is used to heat the water.
