household money saving tipsHousehold money saving tips are a hot topic, this is especially true in times of financial crisis. Today with the worst of the economic downturn behind us people are still looking for ways to save money wherever they can.

The silver lining that came out of our recent economy woes is that it forced us to do something that was previously unheard of - save money.

Naturally, when thinking of ways to save money and cut costs your thoughts immediately turn to your biggest expense - your home.

There are countless ways to save money around the house. If you really put your mind to it, the ideas will come to you faster than you can write them down. Drawing a blank? Don't worry, I've come up with a list of tips to help get you started.

Household Money Saving Tips To Help Get You Started

Here are a few household money saving tips you can start doing today to cut household expenses and save more money.

1. Family budget - Getting your family on a budget is the best way to stop the bleeding. A good budget will have an immediate impact on your bottom line by controlling your spending, increasing cash flow and maximizing your savings. It's important to get all hands on deck and ensure the whole family is on board or the budget will fail. My family and I have had great successs living on a cash budget these past few years but not everyone is willing to go that route. There are plenty of budgeting options to fit your family's needs and lifestyle but the main thing is to just get on a budget.

2. Run major appliance during non-peak hours - You probably didn't know this but your power company has different rates during peak hours. Running large appliances like your clothes dryer during these peak hours costs you more money. So if you only run your dryer during non-peak hours (for most this will be on weekends and after 9PM) it can have a big impact on your power bill.

3. Plan your purchases - Think back to any time where you bought something and immediately regretted it because you knew you spent too much money. You'll probably find that it was because you bought something you hadn't planned on buying. If you don't put any thought into your purchases you are prone to over spend and possibly leave yourself short. You can save yourself alot of money simply by being organized and planning your purchases in advance. Planning your purchases allows you to:

  • Use the two day rule - sleep on it for a couple days, if you need it you will still feel the need to buy it. A want or a whim will pass and you will most likely have forgotten all about it after two days.
  • Pay cash - It's a well-known fact that people have a harder time spending money if their paying cash.Perhaps its the visual aspect of your cash actually changing hands.
  • Use a shopping list - This doesn't only apply to buying groceries, you might also want to use a list when buying back to school supplies.
  • Shop around for the best deal - Don't just go from store to store looking for the best price. Check online, look in the flyers, check the classifieds.
