Living on a budget

living on a budgetThink living on a budget is only for people on fixed or low incomes and couldn't possibly apply to you? Are you worried that a budget will only reduce the standard of living you currently enjoy? Not worth the hassle?

Yes, a low or fixed income person would likely benefit far more from living on a budget than someone like yourself but that doesn't mean that the same budgeting basics and principles can't also be applied to great effect in your life.

I'm not going to lie and tell you that living on a budget is easy because its not - far from it! Budgeting takes alot of time, effort, commitment and requires everyone to be on the same page.

But...

...if you stick it out and stay on budget your efforts will be rewarded immensely!

Set up a goal for your budget

When planning your budget its important to set a goal for yourself. For example, maybe your goal is to get out of debt or save for a down payment on a house. Without a goal your budget is almost guaranteed to fail - your goal will provide the motivation needed for you to stick to your budget diligently.

Staying on budget

To create a budget is the easy part, the hard part is sticking to it. One of the biggest mistakes people make when creating their budget is being over zealous in accomplishing their budgeting goal. For example, if your goal is to get out of debt but you allocate too much of your income towards debt reduction. As a consequence, there is a shortage in other areas of your budget. It's always better to allocate a little less towards your goal, then if there's any extra money in the budget you can put it towards your goal.

Another big mistake first time budgeters tend to make is under estimating their actual expenses. When you first start living on a budget you may find yourself short in some areas (commonly food, entertainment or gas). If that is the case you should re-calculate your budget and increase the amount you're allocating to the expense(s) you found yourself short on. It's better to over allocate and have a little extra until you get it just right.

Some benefits of living on a budget

Let's take a look at how your life and finances can be improved by living on a budget:

  • Pay your mortgage faster
  • Save for a rainy day aka emergency fund

Happy Budgeting!
