I buy one big gift per month and spread the spending out over the whole year, that way it takes the stress out and people get more creative gifts. For example when gardening things go on sale in the fall I buy for my mother.

Spreading out your gift buying over the year really makes it easier to find those bargains and save money at Christmas...and like you said it allows you to find more creative and thoughtful gifts.
