Online Budgeting
Looking for an online budgeting program to help manage your finances? Here are some of the best budgeting tools available online.
If you've tried traditional, low-tech cash budgets like the
envelope budget or
money jar budget but found it to be too much work or too time consuming then online budgeting is the way to go. Many of the budgeting programs available online blend these same traditional budgeting techniques with the speed and convenience of the internet.
The focus of this page is strictly on web-based budgeting and personal finance software but if you prefer an installed desktop solution be sure to visit my personal budgeting software page for some other great programs not mentioned here.
So without further ado...
Premium Online Budgeting Programs
Mvelopes Personal - Is a very popular online budgeting program. The absolute best IMHO! Why? For starters, it's fast and very easy to learn. Here are some other features I really like about Mvelopes Personal:
- It also tracks expenditures in real time
- It has a built-in accelerated debt repayment system (which I really like)
- It integrates with over 11,000 banks (including Canadian banks)
- It's a major time saver
- It takes the hard work out of managing your finances
- It's completely safe!
I think the only downside of Mvelopes Personal is that it is not FREE (although they do offer a FREE trial). I've tested alot of budgeting programs online and offline but no other program does it for me quite like Mvelopes Personal does. Read my full review of Mvelopes Personal.
NOTE: As with any free trial your credit card will be charged unless you cancel your subscription or trial membership on or before the end date of the free trial.
Quicken - is the most recognized brand in finance software and now online budgeting. Quicken is very powerful, user-friendly and very affordable! Here are some of the things I really like about Quicken:
- It Brings your accounts together all in one place and helps you set budgeting and savings goals
- It tracks all your spending in real-time
- It Automatically categorizes your transactions for you
- It has bill payment reminders
- It has goal setting ability for spending or savings
- It integrates easily with TurboTax (TurboTax is sold separately)
Quicken is very comparable to Mvelopes in terms of what it can do but what really sets it apart is price. Quicken is much more reasonably priced than most online budgeting programs including Mvelopes.
Free Online Budgeting Programs
Unlike Mvelopes and Quicken most of the following online budgeting programs are 100% FREE!
MyFinanceX - is currently the only web-based budgeting program I know of that fully incorporates the popular money jar system as seen in the best selling book, "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind". It only supports one currency (British pound) but overall it's a very effective tool for managing finances. There is also a handy mobile version of MyFinanceX.
Mint - is a wildly popular online budgeting application developed by Intuit, the makers of Quicken. Mint has a super slick user interface to help you with everything from budgeting to setting savings goals and it's really simple to setup and learn. One major drawback however is that Mint does not integrate with Canadian Banks.
Billster - Developed in the UK, Billster is a free web-based budgeting application developed to organise your personal and shared expenses. "Shared Bills: If you share a house with other students or professionals, or perhaps you're organising a holiday with a few people, Billster can take the stress out of sorting out who owes what and when."
PearBudget - "PearBudget is a really simple budgeting and expense tracking service. Perfect if you’re new to budgeting, or if you feel overwhelmed by your finances. Simpler and easier to use than Quicken or Microsoft Money. Try PearBudget with a free 30-day trial. After that, it’s only $3 per month!"
Buxfer - "Easy online money management! Get a complete financial picture. Buxfer automatically downloads and categorizes expenses from your
checking, savings and credit card accounts. Get spending insights and
monitor activity on all your accounts at a single place."
BudgetTracker - "Feature rich money management online. Keep Track of your Checking, Investment, Savings
all from one screen. Sync your Transactions by download or enter them manually so you can always stay on top of your Budget. Manage and track your Small Business with Invoices, Estimates, Project Planning, Balance Sheets, and more."
BudgetPulse - BudgetPulse is the perfect solution for managing your finances online. Organize your cash flow, expenses and bank accounts in one place. Easy to understand charts and graphs help you visualize how you're spending your money month-to-month. Track your progress, discover where you can make savings and improve how you manage your money.
