Save Money At Work

save money at workAre you doing everything you can to save money at work? You might be running a tight ship financially at home but if this doesn't extend to your work life you might just be spinning your wheels.

With all the stress of the daily grind its easy to pick up bad spending habits; habits that blend into the background of our day-to-day routines and go largely un-noticed (sometimes intentionally).

In order to save money at work and give your savings some real traction you need to expel these bad habits from your daily work routine. Here are a few bad spending habits that are well worth breaking.

Save Money At Work: A Few Bad Habits Worth Breaking

1. Bringing debit or credit cards to work - Having your debit and credit cards on you can be a very bad thing especially if you're under alot of stress. If you're stressed out you could be tempted to indulge and over spend. If you really want to spend less while at work the first thing you should do is leave your plastic at home.

2. Not taking full advantage of company benefits - This is a no brainer way to save money at work. Your employee benefits might be full of savings or free money that your just leaving on the table without even knowing it. Find out exactly what your benefits include and be sure to take advantage of any benefits that put more money in your pocket. Things like subsidies, travel allowances, expnese accounts, employee discounts, RRSP contribution matching and tuition reimbursements are all examples of free money you could be missing out on.

3. Going out to lunch - Of course there will always be times where you just don't have the time to pack a lunch or you just want to go out to lunch with friends or even the occasional business lunch. However, making a habit of going out to lunch can get very expensive very quickly.

4. Not getting in on the office car pool - If there isn't already a car pool at your work or office, start one, it can add up to alot of extra money in your pocket and your initiative might even impress your boss. The more people you can get to car pool with you the more you will save in gas and parking fees.

5. Buying your morning coffee - Do you really need that Tim Horton's or Starbucks coffee every morning? It makes no sense to pay for a coffee when you can get free coffee at work. If your work place doesn't have free coffee invest in a travel mug and bring your own coffee from home. Cutting out this minor expense from your daily routine can add up to major savings over time.
